Emerging Elite Program
Program Concept:

Individual Coaching:
The goal is to crack the code for each athlete, identifying strengths and weaknesses to
optimize all the parameters of human performance.

  •     Coach meets with athlete and parent (optional, but advised) for an initial short and
    long   term goal setting session.
  •     Goals include: race times, race qualifying, college recruitment, National Team
    Selection, Etc.
  •     Coach develops a program to achieve the goals

The Program will follow the very stringent, all encompassing parameters of the USOC Emerging
Elite concept, including:

        Stride mechanics analysis
        Stride mechanics coaching
        Nutrition analysis
        Nutrition counseling
        General health and injury prevention
        Anthropometric Testing (body weight, water weight, muscle weight, bone mass, basal
metabolic rate)
        Time management
        Sports Psychology
        Blood test result analysis
        Race Strategy and Tactics
        College Recruitment counseling
        Goal progress (including anthropometric testing) will be reevaluated on an individual
basis

This is an individualized program addressing running conditioning with a total athlete
approach. We will try to identify and correct any weak links that could potentially hamper efforts
to reach each athlete’s running potential.
Total body development is emphasized through the use of cross training. Runners tend to be
developmentally imbalanced, leading eventually to injuries and immediately to a weaker runner.
The accessory and supporting muscles and connective tissues do not receive enough of a
training stimulus to keep pace with the primary muscle movers involved in running. It is these
weaker areas that tend to fatigue in a race, setting up a cycle of gradually decreasing efficiency
of running form with a greater cost of energy, resulting in a decreasing speed and obviously
slower time.

•        Stride mechanics will be a constant work in progress

•        Presentations and handouts on both general and training and race specific nutrition will
address critical nutrition areas. A one week Daily Food Consumption Log will be required. This
log will enable advice on correcting any obvious nutritional deficiencies.

•        A Sleep Log will also be required. Certain deficient sleep patterns can be identified and
corrected. Time management is the key here. A Training Log will also be required, documenting
daily workouts with comments.

•        A Time Management Tracking Form is also required

•        General blood tests and very specific tests for Iron Deficiency will be required, through
either the Team Physician or the athlete’s personal physician. Iron deficiency is the number 1
nutritional disorder in the world, with 80% of the world population deficient. Statistically, 50% of
female, teenage athletes are iron deficient. Iron deficiency anemia (low hemoglobin) is a late
sign of iron deficiency. Most doctors use low hemoglobin and possibly low serum iron as the
criteria. At this point, the athlete’s season is over. More specific tests for iron storage need to
be performed and can “catch” any deficiencies early. Low iron = poor performance. Detailed
information on these tests will follow. I will forward additional information from the WHO.

        A Global Position System (GPS) will also be used in training to track accurate distance and
pacing.

•        Anthropometric testing will be performed and a program will be designed to optimize the
athletes body proportions

•        Athletes will need a passport and be registered with the USATF.

•        Athletes and parents are required to attend a USADA presentation or otherwise be familiar
with USADA regulations.

South Coast XC Elite follows national and international rules and guidelines established by the
USATF, the USOC and the USADA (United States Anti-Doping Association).

This program will demand a significant commitment of time and energy, precluding those who are
stretched thin with other commitments or who are not disciplined and motivated to comply with the
rigors of this program. Conditioning, Nutrition, and Rest are all equally critical, and failure to
comply with any of these three basic tenets will result in less than desired results.
The USATF (USA Track and Field) and the USOC (United States Olympic Committee)
have partnered to develop a new program called the Emerging Elite Program, formally

called the Olympic Development Program. I am part of a cadre of
coaches selected
nationally to attend certification and indoctrination clinics to coach in this program.
SCXC Elite has committed to implement this program locally by identifying, training
and motivating talented athletes who aspire to compete at the collegiate, national and
international level
.
